Project‑Based Learning Training for Career & Technical Education
Full‑Day Professional Development Agenda (6.5 Hours + 1.5 Hours Homework)
8:30–9:00 — My Why: The Purpose Behind PBL in CTE
The session opens with a personal introduction to the philosophy and impact of project‑based learning. Participants will explore the “why” behind hands‑on, student‑centered instruction and how shifting from traditional teaching to PBL transforms engagement, skill development, and classroom culture.
9:00–10:30 — Understanding PBL in CTE Classrooms
This session breaks down the core components of project‑based learning and demonstrates how PBL is not more work for teachers—it is different work that leads to better outcomes.
Topics include:
• Less Work, More Purpose: How PBL reduces repetitive tasks and increases student ownership
• Student Expectations: Setting clear roles, responsibilities, and accountability
• Organizing Projects & Supplies: Systems that keep classrooms running smoothly
• Grading Made Easy: Streamlined, rubric‑based assessment that saves time and increases clarity
10:30–10:50 — Break
10:50–12:00 — Reviewing Available Projects
Participants will explore a variety of ready‑to‑use PBL activities aligned to CTE standards. This session highlights project structure, required materials, pacing, and differentiation options so teachers can immediately implement them in their classrooms.
12:00–1:00 — Lunch
During lunch, teachers can ask questions, share challenges, and discuss how PBL fits into their specific pathways. This informal session encourages collaboration and idea‑sharing across programs.
1:00–2:30 — Hands‑On Session: Completing Three PBL Activities
Teachers will step into the role of students as they complete three hands‑on projects. This experience helps educators understand the student perspective, identify potential challenges, and see how PBL naturally builds critical thinking, creativity, and problem‑solving.
2:30–3:00 — Brainstorming: How to Create Your Own PBL Projects
The day concludes with a guided brainstorming session where teachers outline new project ideas tailored to their course standards. Participants will leave with the foundation for at least one new project they can implement immediately.
Homework (1.5 Hours): Connecting PBL to Your Standards
Teachers will review the objectives taught in their CTE course and identify:
• Topics that already have strong project opportunities
• Topics that need a new project
• Topics that require a learning tool or hands‑on activity
This reflective assignment ensures that PBL is intentionally woven into the curriculum rather than added on top of existing work.
